If it’s raining, we just want a comfortable bed and a shower, or just to explore the city for a change, we stay inside. We had never heard of Oregon Garden until we stayed there during our dog-friendly Willamette Valley wine tour. This beautiful Lodge features an 80-acre botanical garden and 20 different specialty gardens that showcase the diversity of the Willamette Valley and the Pacific Northwest.

During our visit, Sora received a goodie bag containing a tennis ball, a squeaky toy, dog treats and charDOGnay (yes, as in dog wine)! Our hostess, Jean, went above and beyond to accommodate our bikes, Sora and our vegan diet. An avid bike commuter himself, he’s biked across 33 states, so he knew our needs well when we hit the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway. He made us feel at home from the start and let us store our bikes and trailer safely in the carriage house.
What he really scored was breakfast. He seated us and dropped plate after plate of food on our seats. We started with a large fruit salad topped with coconut cream, followed by a fruit-packed green smoothie, and ended with a bowl of quinoa porridge with toast and local jam, all accompanied by Steel Bridge Coffee – carefully selected coffee delivered by bicycle. He knew we had a long day ahead of us and sent us away with full stomachs for the duration of the trip.

With an RV park, tent areas, lodges, cabins and mountain cabins, there are accommodation options for every type of visit and budget. Hot springs are included in the price, and certain pools and hours are for guests only to avoid overcrowding. The 50 kilometer long McKenzie River Trail is accessible directly from the lodge.

During breakfast, a pack of friendly puppies run in and out of the cabin, under the table, at the feet and interrupting staff meetings. If you are not a dog lover, this might not be the hotel for you, but if you are traveling with your dog, this is the place.
Choose from a cabin or a cottage as a place to stay. I’ll be honest if you go on Trip Advisor you will find some less than positive reviews. We did not see the interior of the cabin other than the common area, and we never visited the original cabin. This appears to be a visitor issue. We were more than happy with our cabin, the staff and the overall experience.
You can rent paddle boards, canoes, kayaks and mountain bikes at the boat center, or you can choose a three-mile loop around the lake.

The Hood River Hotel dates back to 1888, when the city of Hood River was founded. Although the original hotel was demolished, the annex built in 1912 survived and has been welcoming guests ever since. Located in downtown Hood River, walking distance to restaurants, cafes, breweries and shops. Our favorite spots in Hood River are by the river (Solstice and pFriem, both dog friendly), a bit of a longer walk, but definitely manageable. Also, in the summer you can walk in the middle of the Columbia River if the sand bar is gone. The water is like bathing water and when you reach the end you can jump under the water and cool off. Lots of hiking opportunities in all directions.
Let’s be honest, we haven’t stayed at Hotel Monaco, mainly because we already have a house in Portland, but I always had my eyes on this place! It is known as one of the most pet friendly hotels in the city. They even have a page on their website where they show what their pets are like. And if that’s not enough, they have a Pet Relationship Manager. She calls Addison and greets you with a wagging tail and kisses if you’re lucky.

Don’t worry, if you’re not vegan, you won’t ‘ll even notice. Promise. I’m not just saying that. It’s true. Go. Try. Now.). Just a short walk away is Fernhill Park, a large park with a large dog area.
