Regardless of whether the course was completed in a classroom setting or online, upon successful completion of at least 120 credit hours in each of the four areas described below, a Philosophy student will have met all course requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A. ) Bachelor of Philosophy.

The first area is Philosophy courses (‘PHIL’). A specialization needs a minimum of 33 credits of PHIL courses distributed as follows:

College Degree Program

There are five required PHIL courses for a total of 13 credits that each major must complete. Four of these courses are in the “central areas” of logic, value theory, and history of philosophy. The remaining required course is PHIL 3030: Individual Seminar for Seniors. Typically, this course is taken during the semester in which the student plans to graduate. By then, he will have written quite a few philosophical essays.

In PHIL 3030, each major works with a faculty member to rewrite an argumentative essay and then defend their essay orally to the entire Faculty of Philosophy.

This sounds a lot scarier than it is. But what it is is a way for each major to demonstrate mastery of certain skills that every major should possess, such as: reading philosophical texts, reconstructing the argument presented in a text, writing a philosophical essay to defend one’s position . and verbally defend their position. Almost any PHIL course may be taken to fulfill the remaining 20 credits, as long as: (1) at least 15 credits are 3000+ level courses, (2) no more than 6 credits of 1000 level courses are included, and (3) completed at least a subject (at any level) whose second number is 4, which corresponds to the remaining “core areas” of the discipline of Philosophy: metaphysics and epistemology. The degree program in Philosophy offers students maximum flexibility to choose courses of interest.

Students electing to graduate with honors from the department or college will complete PHIL 3001: Senior Honors Thesis in lieu of PHIL 3030. PHIL 3001 is a two-semester, 6-credit sequence that, like PHIL 3030, culminates in the oral defense of a written essay. one semester under the supervision of a faculty advisor. These 6 credits cannot be used towards the total 33 credits of PHIL courses that each course must complete. Therefore, any student who chooses to graduate with university or department honors must complete a minimum of 39 credits of PHIL courses.

The Department of Philosophy is in the College of Liberal Arts. Therefore, Philosophy majors must meet all of our university’s general education requirements. To do this, each study program must receive at least 36 or 39 credits distributed as follows:

The foreign language requirement for College of Liberal Arts students deserves some comment. Typically, a liberal arts student fulfills this requirement in two ways: complete 1001, 1002, and 2001 in one foreign language, or complete 1001 and 1002 in two foreign languages. Please note that although American Sign Language (ASL) courses can be used to fulfill foreign language at other universities in , these courses cannot be used to fulfill this requirement in the College of Liberal Arts. Majors may take ASL courses, but they will only count as general electives.

There are 15 units of additional general education requirements for a B.A. in Philosophy. These are courses that have to do with math and science (starting with 2 sciences and at least one course must start with BIOS):
