The Accelerated Masters in Nursing program for non-nurses equips bright and motivated students to pursue a master’s-preparatory nursing education at a nationally recognized university in New York. College graduates can build on their previous healthcare experience to pursue a new career in nursing and specialize as a nurse practitioner in less time.
Accelerated Master Of Science In Nursing
Upon acceptance into the program, Accelerated Master in Nursing students gain admission to the 12-month Bachelor of Nursing (ABSN) program and the Master’s Nurse Practitioner program in their chosen clinical specialty. Through the Accelerated Bachelor’s Program, students earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing within 12 months. Upon completion, they take the NCLEX-RN exam to obtain their RN license and proceed to a master’s degree.
Accelerated Bachelor Of Science In Nursing
Most students are recommended to apply for the 12-month ABSN only to earn a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in nursing within 12 months. This allows students to gain insight into each clinical specialty before deciding which specialty to pursue at the master’s level. Additionally, it provides students with in-depth insight into the nursing profession and the healthcare industry through extensive clinical experiences at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
To be admitted to the Accelerated Master’s in Nursing program, students must have previously earned a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than nursing with a grade point average of at least 3.0. Because admission to this program is highly competitive and limited spaces are available, prior healthcare experience (professional or volunteer) appropriate to the selected nurse’s specialty is required.
Students may apply to begin the program in the spring or summer semester by successfully completing the required course requirements (21-24 credits).
If you are unsure about which program or specialization you should pursue, we encourage you to attend an upcoming event or contact an admissions counselor to discuss your options.

Registered nurses (RNs) have many options for nursing education programs. Those with a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing discipline can pursue an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) or a Master’s Entry in Nursing Practice (MENP) program to prepare for a nursing career. The MENP program is also known as the accelerated MSN or direct MSN program.
Accelerated B.s. In Nursing
But how do the programs compare? Let’s discuss the differences between the degrees and how they prepare nurses to enter a new career.
They are aimed at people who have earned a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing discipline. You do not need any prior nursing education or experience to apply directly to the ABSN or MSN program.
For the ABSN program, you will earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. For the accelerated MSN program, you will receive a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). Both programs prepare graduates to take the National Nursing Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and become nurses.
The MENP program adds additional graduate-level content such as leadership, quality and safety. MSN graduates can immediately take the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) certification exam upon completion. CNL certification and several years of nursing experience prepare you to take on additional responsibilities and advance up the clinical ladder within a healthcare organization.
Direct Entry Master Of Science In Nursing
Second career nurses have different educational backgrounds. They have one thing in common: the motivation to start a new career knowing that they can make a difference.
ABSN students want to make a difference through direct patient care and pursue the fastest path into the nursing profession.
MSN students want to study nursing and advance into leadership or advanced nursing positions. She began her nursing career with a master’s degree and CNL competencies to improve patient outcomes through strategic decision making. Often, graduates of the MENP program choose to take additional academic courses. This includes obtaining a post-master’s/post-graduate certificate or a doctoral degree (e.g. DNP, Ph.D.).
Both nursing education programs are excellent. Regardless of the student’s motivation, accelerated BSN and MSN programs enable professionals from diverse backgrounds to pursue a rewarding new career in nursing.
Nursing Undergraduate Programs
Earning an ABSN or MENP will help you transition into a career in nursing. Both programs require a prior bachelor’s degree in any discipline. The difference between each program depends on your career goals and background. Accelerated BSN and MSN programs have different requirements, curricula, formats, and lengths.
The accelerated BSN program and the direct MSN program have the same course requirements, but some specific requirements vary by program.
One example is grade point average (GPA). All ABSN and MENP programs require candidates to have a minimum GPA. The exact requirements vary depending on the nursing training program. Typically, applicants to MENP programs require a higher GPA than applicants to ABSN programs.
The ABSN and MENP program curriculum prepares students to enter the nursing profession. ABSN prepares for general nursing practice. MENP-prepared nurses study general practice standards and content on leadership, quality and safety. MSN graduates are immediately prepared for the CNL exam.
Accelerated Second Degree Nursing
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) establishes competencies used to improve the quality of nursing education. In Spring 2021, Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education has been updated and nursing programs will follow to update the existing curriculum.
There are 10 areas and competencies that represent the essence of professional nursing practice. This also applies to entry-level and advanced training, but the sub-competencies increase in complexity from the entry level of professional nursing practice to the advanced level of nursing practice. The following are the key elements of a professional nursing education program:
The ABSN and MENP programs prepare students to take the NCLEX-RN to begin an entry-level nursing career. The curriculum in both programs follows the content outlined in the NCLEX-RN plan.
The ABSN program offers the fastest path to an RN license and takes 11 to 18 months to complete. They are shorter than traditional 4-year entry-level nursing programs because the curriculum builds on students’ prior learning experiences.
Master Of Science In Nursing (msn) Degree Program
The MENP program is longer than the ABSN program. They last approximately two to three years as graduate courses in leadership, quality, safety and evidence integration are put into practice.
The ABSN and MENP program formats are identical. You will develop your skills through a combination of coursework and clinical experience. In the distance learning program, students complete courses online and participate in clinical rotations in the local community. They have one to two residencies on campus where they participate in simulated clinical experiences. Simulation experiences allow nursing students to apply clinical and nursing skills learned in the classroom without risk to real patients.
Due to their condensed nature, the accelerated BSN program and the MSN direct entry program are comprehensive, intensive courses. Most ABSN and MENP programs require students not to work during their studies. The advantage of this rigorous structure is that it prepares you for a second nursing career in less time than traditional BSN and MSN programs.
Career prospects in nursing are good for graduates of BSN and MSN programs. They are ready to fill some of the most in-demand positions in healthcare.
Accelerated Nursing Program
Accelerated BSN and MSN degrees prepare second career nurses to work as RNs. Registered nurses provide patient care and education in many healthcare facilities. Around 75 percent of nursing staff work in hospitals and outpatient clinics. You may work in a variety of hospital settings including postoperative, acute care, emergency and postpartum. Outpatient facilities include outpatient clinics, emergency rooms or infusion clinics as well as public health services. The rest of the nurses work in nursing and residential facilities, in the public sector and in education. Nurses can also be educators. Examples of nursing educator roles include diabetes educators, nursing educators, and college professors.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of nursing jobs will grow 7% between 2019 and 2029, almost twice as fast as the average for all occupations.
BSN and MSN-prepared nursing graduates have better nursing career prospects than nurses with an associate degree. Therefore, graduates of ABSN and MENP programs have some of the best career prospects for nurses.
