PMH nurses work dually in this clinical nursing specialty, providing both physical and mental health care to a variety of patients, in a variety of settings. These nurses work with children, teenagers and adults of all ages. They are skilled in treating anxiety, depression, psychosis, PTSD, schizophrenia, and substance abuse, to name a few.

Mental health nurses educate patients, families, and communities to help them better understand that the whole of life includes mental health. They work tirelessly to eliminate the stigma associated with mental health care and treatment. PMH nurses help patients with daily activities, manage medications and treatment plans, monitor patients’ progress, consult with psychiatrists and other health professionals, and provide support to patients and their families.

Nursing students are introduced to various aspects of health care during their studies and education. Many programs offer rotations to PMH nurses that introduce students to the specialty and allow you to see what working in the field entails. Volunteering in a setting that helps people with mental health issues can provide insight into working with these patients.
If you find that you liked this part of your education, here are the steps to take to get a PMH nursing certificate, and it is valid for five years:
Mental health jobs require significant empathy and require strong communication and problem-solving skills to build trusting relationships with patients and staff. Maintaining open communication and working with other employees to implement intervention programs is important in the workplace. PMH nurses bring a strong foundation in basic and behavioral science and teach problem-solving techniques to help patients feel more empowered in situations where they may feel less in control.
For all nurses, especially PMH nurses, there is a balance between being compassionate to a patient in distress and being emotionally close. While it’s easy to overinvest, remember that you’re providing the patient’s medical needs and emotional distance not only to protect the patient, but to protect you.

Developing resilience and the ability to maintain some mental distance from your work are important skills to make this work a sustainable career. The job requires incredible patience, flexibility and careful listening. Some of your patients will test your determination, but relying on your training and soft skills, trusting your mentors and team, and staying educated will get you far.
Some PMH nurses work in the community to provide mental health services while others help individuals perform daily activities and improve their lives. PMH nurses work in settings that provide mental health services and perform a variety of tasks, depending on the workplace. This results in a range of professional natural options, including:
A team of PMH nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers is needed to provide quality mental health care. The four professionals have some common responsibilities, but vary in qualifications, training and responsibilities.
Psychiatric-mental Health (PMH) nurses are registered nurses with a specialty in psychiatry, who promote the well-being of their patients primarily through prevention and education. They assess, evaluate, educate and support individuals and families with mental health or substance abuse problems.

Psychiatrists are doctors who specialize in treating mental health and mood disorders and substance abuse problems. They are qualified to assess both the psychological and physical aspects of mental disorders, and use both psychotherapy and medication for diagnosed medical conditions.
Psychologists have a doctorate or PsyD in the study of mental, emotional, and social processes as they relate to behavior. Unlike psychiatrists who may prescribe medication, diagnose or treat physical health conditions, psychologists conduct psychological assessments by observing and interpreting human behavior as it relates to others and the environment. Treatment approaches often focus on behavioral and lifestyle interventions rather than medication.
Mental health social workers have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work, usually with a concentration in mental health. They work directly with clients and are trained to provide counseling for both individuals and families and work with psychiatrists and psychologists to provide support and resources for those with mental illness.
Due to the growing demand for their services, PMH nursing offers solid compensation. Average pay depends on many factors, such as level of education, years of experience, size of practice or hospital, and location. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Track, is responsible for providing health care in the areas of mental health promotion, disease prevention and clinical management of mental health conditions.
